Great Nebraska, About

Great Nebraska Naturalists & Scientists provides access to primary source documents and publications that illustrate the unique resources that document the environmental history of Nebraska. Many of these items were created by early faculty and others associated with the University of Nebraska.

The project includes transcription of selected materials created by individuals whose interests and research focused on Nebraska, the Nebraska Sandhills and Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska. The transcription encoding, initially done through the use of the Text Encoding Initative (TEI) P5 Guidelines, is now presented through WordPress.

The Naturalists & Scientists site is based on the an earlier project to place Frank H. Shoemaker’s narratives, records, and selected photographs online initiated with a research grant from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries. Mary Ellen Ducey, Elaine Nowick, and Rebecca Bernthal began the project by scanning photographic plates and negatives from Shoemaker’s collection of glass plate negatives, film negatives, prints, and documents. Nowick and Bernthal received support from the Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience (UCARE) program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

The Great Nebraska Naturalists & Scientists project received support through an anonymous donation to the Archives & Special Collections in 2013.

A great deal of thanks goes to many individuals who assisted with various aspects of this project. Josh Caster, Benjamin Schmitz, who were involved in scanning and transcriptions. Laura Weakly, Karin Dalziel, Keith Nickum, and Jared Roehrich provided assistance on production of earlier websites.
