Charles E. Bessey began his career at the University of Nebraska in 1884 as a professor of botany. He also served as acting chancellor in both 1888-1891 and 1899-1900. Prior to coming to Lincoln, Nebraska, Bessey taught at the Iowa State Agriculture College from 1870-1884. He studied at Michigan Agricultural College and at Yale.
