Frederic Edward Clements attended the University of Nebraska where he received his Bachelors of Science in 1894, masters in 1896, and a Ph.D. in 1898, all focused on botany. Clements remained at the university to teach until 1907, when he left to take a faculty position at the University of Minnesota. Beginning in 1917, Clements worked for the Carnegie Institution of Washington as director of the Alpine Laboratory at Pikes Peak, Colorado.
Clements died on July 26, 1945, survived by his wife, Edith Schwartz Clements. The two were married in 1899, in Lincoln, Nebraska.
